Tower Crane Dismantle at 360 William Street

Project Summary

Client: MCG

Location: 360 William Street, Melbourne

Crane: Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1

Project Overview

Tower Crane Dismantle at 360 William Street

We highlighted a tower crane dismantle operation in Melbourne’s CBD, where Premier Cranes & Rigging was engaged to safely remove a JL516 tower crane from a high-rise construction site at 360 William Street.

Working in a dense urban environment required careful planning and coordination, particularly due to restricted crane setup space, surrounding buildings, and the need to maintain strict exclusion zones.

Using the LTM 1450-8.1, Premier executed a sequence of controlled lifts to dismantle the tower crane piece by piece, including the jib, A-frame, climbing frame, cab assembly, and tower sections.

Each component required a tailored rigging arrangement and precise crane positioning to maintain safe working loads throughout the lift sequence.

Challenges

Complex Multi-Stage Dismantling Sequence

Tower crane removals require a carefully planned sequence to ensure structural stability during each stage of dismantling.

Major components such as the jib, A-frame, and climbing frame needed to be removed in a strict order.

Load weights varied across components, including:

  • 30m jib – approximately 10 tonnes
  • A-frame – approximately 10.5 tonnes
  • Climbing frame – approximately 14 tonnes
  • Double tower sections – approximately 16 tonnes

Each lift required a unique rigging configuration and crane setup to ensure the loads remained well within chart capacity.

Restricted Urban Work Area

Operating in Melbourne’s CBD meant the crane had to be positioned precisely within limited site space while maintaining safe lift radii and clear slewing paths.

Exclusion zones and barricading were established around the crane setup area to prevent public access and ensure safe operations during lifting activities.

Ground Load Management

Heavy crane operations required careful management of ground pressures to ensure safe load distribution.

Bog mats were used beneath the crane outriggers to spread loads evenly across the prepared surface and maintain ground bearing pressures within allowable limits.

Solutions

Premier’s engineering team developed a detailed lift study outlining the crane configuration, rigging arrangements, and lift sequence required for the dismantle.

The LTM 1450-8.1 , configured with 84 tonnes of counterweight and a 70-metre jib configuration, provided the reach and capacity needed to safely remove each tower crane component while maintaining conservative utilisation levels throughout the lift.

Rigging arrangements were tailored for each lift, including multi-leg chain slings, polyester round slings, and certified lifting hardware to ensure loads were securely controlled during hoisting and placement.

A structured lift process was followed for every component, including controlled rigging connection, load verification, coordinated hoisting, and careful placement before releasing the crane load.

CONCLUSION

Engineering Excellence at Its Best

Tower crane dismantles demand precision planning, experienced crews, and disciplined execution.

Through engineered lift studies, detailed rigging strategies, and the capabilities of the LTM 1450-8.1, Premier Cranes & Rigging delivered a safe and controlled dismantling operation within a challenging CBD environment.

This project once again demonstrates Premier’s ability to handle complex lifting operations where engineering certainty and operational experience are essential to delivering successful outcomes.
