Before You Hire a 40T Franna, Read This FirstĀ

Choosing the right crane is only part of planning a successful lift.

Understanding the 40T Franna load chart is equally important.

At Premier Cranes & Rigging, our fleet of Terex AT40 Franna cranes are trusted across Melbourne for construction, industrial maintenance, infrastructure works and shutdown projects.

Their ability to pick, carry and place loads efficiently makes them one of the most versatile cranes on Australian job sites.

But before every lift, one document matters more than any other, the load chart.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Franna Load Chart?

A load chart is the manufacturer’s guide that specifies the crane’s lifting capabilities under different operating conditions.

It tells Operators the maximum load the crane can safely lift based on factors including:

  • Boom length
  • Working radius
  • Pick-and-carry operation
  • Static lifting
  • Boom angle
  • Ground conditions

The load chart isn’t a guide or recommendation – It’s an operating limit that must never be exceeded.

Why the Load Chart Matters

Every lift is different – The same crane may safely lift one load in a particular position but require a completely different capacity when the load is moved further away or carried across site.

Using the correct load chart helps ensure:

  • Safe crane operation
  • Accurate lift planning
  • Compliance with Australian lifting requirements
  • Protection of personnel and equipment
  • Reduced risk of overload incidents

At Premier, our lift planning process always references the manufacturer’s load chart before work begins.

Meet the Terex AT40 Franna

The Terex AT40 is one of Australia’s most popular 40-tonne pick and carry cranes.

Its ability to move with a load makes it ideal for projects where larger all-terrain cranes simply cannot access.

Specifications

  • Maximum Capacity – 40 tonnesĀ
  • Main Boom – 19.8 mĀ
  • Maximum Tip Height – 19.8 m
  • Overall Length – 10.7 mĀ
  • Width – 2.74 mĀ
  • Height – 3.47 m

The 3-axle design delivers excellent manoeuvrability while eliminating the need for removable counterweights, making the AT40 an efficient choice for busy construction sites and tough work areas.

Why the AT40 Franna is such a trusted choice for a wide range of lifting and pick-and-carry work

Choosing the right crane is about more than capacity alone.

Safety matters too.

The AT40 combines strong lifting performance with built-in technology designed to support safer, more controlled lifting operations.

These include:

  • Dynamic LMI – real-time monitoring helps the operator manage crane capacity and lifting conditions within safe working limits.
  • Safety Radar Technology – provides greater awareness around the crane, helping Operators identify potential hazards in busy or restricted work areas.
  • 360° Eagle Eye Viewing Technology – gives the Operator enhanced visibility around the crane, helping improve situational awareness during setup, lifting and movement on site.

Combined with excellent visibility, traction control and hydro-pneumatic suspension, the AT40 gives you more than lifting capacity, it gives you a capable, modern crane designed with performance, Operator awareness and safety in mind.

Designed in accordance with AS 1418.5, the AT40 also reflects recognised Australian requirements for mobile crane design and safety, giving customers even greater confidence when choosing the crane for their next lift.

Common Questions About the 40T Franna Load Chart

Can the crane lift 40 tonnes at full reach?

No.

The 40-tonne rating is the maximum capacity under specific operating conditions.

As the working radius increases or boom configuration changes, the crane’s lifting capacity decreases.

Always refer to the official load chart for allowable capacities.

Does ground condition affect lifting capacity?

Absolutely – Poor or unstable ground can significantly increase lifting risk.

The AT40’s Dynamic LMI supports the Operator with real-time monitoring, but it still has limitations.

Steep slopes, very soft ground or unstable surfaces must always be assessed before lifting begins.
